web work
www.displaycentre.co.uk
www.displaycentre.co.uk has now been completed. The Display Centre is at Fareham, Hampshire, and specialises in shop fittings. The catalogue can be viewed on line, with full shopping basket and checkout facilities. The client is able to manipulate the online catalog via a custom PC application. Other features include vouchers (discount code management) and email order tracking.
www.accon-uk.com
ACCON UK is a multidisciplinary environmental consultancy company that has recently been formed. The website has been completed using .NET technology and Flash. It uses the ContentEngine(TM) to allow the whole site to be maintainable.
www.alpha-acoustics.co.uk
Alpha Acoustics has recently decided that a website will help more potential clients reach them. It includes the visualisation of a noise test, illustrating how such a test takes place. Built with the ContentEngine(TM) to make the whole site maintainable. Further information about what Alpha Acoustics do is here.
www.grandalpha.eu
Launching in January 2007, this site is set to become a major online community for athletes. A complete membership system has been developed that allows members to sign up, register and fill in their online profile. Pictures can be uploaded, and blog, news items and the athlete's own biographical details can be maintained. This website utilises the advanced version of the ContentEngine(TM).
www.gt4design.com
This company builds websites, and can also build complex interactive applications using the Microsoft.NET framework. Just the kind of company I would want to work for!
www.contentengine.co.uk
This is a website that demonstrates the ContentEngine(TM) application I have put together using VB.NET. I have also written about it here. This is a full online demo. It's possible to maintain:
- images
- text
- titles
- links
- tables
- slide shows
www.letsalldanceco.uk
This has been written in VB.NET and has a full content management system behind the scenes. Ths allows www.letsalldance.co.uk to update the pages without hiring a web specialist. It uses XHTML, CSS and XML for the database.
www.sallymungall.co.uk
Sally Mungall is a local artist, who paints with a bold, abstractional style. Sally requested a minimalist treatment, with little ornamentation. This way Sally's work can be viewed in the virtual equivalent of a display space. This approach allows the art to speak for itself.
I built the web site for her using VB.NET, and the content is stored in a series of XML files. The administration pages allow Sally to change the content of the pages, and update the contents of the various gallery rooms easily.
www.oakleaguesthouse.co.uk
Multiple page website that details the features of this guest house - just round the corner from where I live. It's a lovely old building. The site includes administration features. Built using html, css, javascript and php. I've originated all photos and graphics.
The contact us page has a PHP form which can be used for prospective customers to make an enquiry.
Such forms fulfil a very important function. If the website is viewed at an internet cafe, library or similar venue, there won't be pop3 email available.
www.vorticism.co.uk
I have recently rebuit www.vorticism.co.uk. This is a tribute site to my favourite art movement, the Vorticists. I have used XHTML, CSS, and Javascript to deal with the sub-menus. Javascript is also used to defend email addresses from spambots. The navigation links 'stick on' for specific pages utilising the CSS descendant selectors technique. I previously had to use Javacript for this trick.
I have also built a set of pages to help with my revision regarding Visual Basic.Net. The logical step to this: revision pages for VB.Net written in VB.Net! Once again, both these sites use XHTML (see note below) and CSS to supply all presentational markup. The latter site uses VB.Net to dynamically produce each page using XML for the menu structure, text files for the html and session state handled by ASP_NET.
Note: I'm afraid Microsoft Visual Studio.Net 2003 (which I've used to produce the VB.Net version of the revision site) doesn't produce valid XHTML 1.0 code. This is currently being corrected for the next version.
course
I’ve been busy studying at UK IT in Tolworth, Surrey.
These are the qualifications I have gained, most recent first:
- #70-310 - Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Framework
- #70-305 - Developing and Implementing Web Applications with Visual Basic .NET and the .NET Framework
- CIW Master Designer
- ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence)
The CIW Master Designer qualification is gained by passing three exams in the following four areas (the first exam includes the first two subjects):
- Network Technology Foundations
- Internet Business Foundations
- Site Development
- E-Commerce Strategies and Practices
Although this qualification is American, the course was found to be superb. Areas never before touched on include Accessibility, XHTML, and the technology behind the internet. A useful course!
This is the European Computer Driving License qualification and is gained by passing seven separate exams. These are:
- Basic Concepts of Information Technology
- Using the Computer and Managing Files
- Word Processing
- Spreadsheets
- Databases
- Presentation
- Information and Communication
A minimum pass of 70% is required for the exams. Naturally, I’m too modest list the pass marks I gained! The exam is administered in the UK by the British Computer Society. My qualification was gained in September 2005.
This course is a useful step to other courses. It is necessary to get attain this qualification before going on to more relevant courses for the nascent web designer.
